Study Abroad and Off-Campus Study

“I was very happy with the unique learning experiences I received through HECUA that I could never have gotten in traditional lecture-based classes. Plus I practically earned a sustainable studies minor, which is very exciting for me!”
—Laura Cina, junior, political science major, Environmental Sustainability program
A liberal arts education helps you gain an understanding of other cultures, languages and world views.
The University of Minnesota provides various opportunities to study abroad or go on exchange to another campus. Immersing yourself in another place and culture is a great way to broaden your education.
International study
The Learning Abroad Center has more than 250 study, work and internship programs in over 60 countries in the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania.
National Student Exchange (NSE)
University of Minnesota students can take part in the National Student Exchange program. Through NSE, you can study for up to one academic year at participating schools all over the U.S., as well as Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, and Canada! You'll earn credit toward your degree and can usually pay in-state tuition.
“NSE has forced me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow as a person. I've had so much fun and learned so much about myself.”
—Tiffany Gunderson, sophomore, communications major, NSE exchange to California State University, Los Angeles
Go on an exchange to check out potential graduate schools, job markets and places to live. Study with other faculty and take other courses. It's an affordable way to broaden your undergraduate experience.
HECUA: Off-Campus Study in Minnesota
HECUA (Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs) programs give you the chance to study off-campus in the Twin Cities area while focusing on social justice issues. You can choose to study the environment, the arts or urban studies. Each semester-long HECUA program is 16 credits and features classroom studies, field work and an internship. It's a great way to gain hands-on experience while focusing on issues that matter to you.
