CLA Advising

As a CLA student, you'll be part of a student community, an office where we will help track your academic progress and provide advising and information. Consider it your academic home base. The community that you will belong to will depend on your academic interests and/or major.

You'll have a team of advisers who are available to help you from your first registration to your final clearance for graduation. These advisers include:

  • Your college adviser
  • Your peer adviser
  • Your major adviser
  • Your Career and Community Learning Center (CCLC) liaison

Your College Adviser

Your college adviser is a professional adviser who specializes in guiding CLA students. He or she helps you:

  • choose a proposed major
  • plan your program to stay on track for timely graduation
  • understand University policies and procedures and exceptions to them
  • learn about University learning opportunities outside of the classroom
  • graduate by reviewing your coursework and clearing you to graduate
  • plan your next steps after graduation

Your Peer Adviser

Your peer adviser is an experienced fellow student carefully trained to be knowledgeable about CLA and University requirements and resources. He or she helps you:

  • learn how to use the tools and resources available to plan your program
  • plan your course load and schedule, especially in your first year

Your Major Adviser

Your major adviser, who is based in your major department's office, is the expert on the requirements, courses, activities, and faculty of your major department. He or she helps you:

  • choose a proposed major
  • prepare a Major Program Form to map out the courses you will take to finish it
  • enrich your major through programs and events in your major department
  • plan for graduate study and careers related to your major

Your Career and Community Learning Center Liaison

Your CCLC liaison is a professional career counselor who will connect you to the resources available in the Career and Community Learning Center.  He or she can help you:

  • find out how to access internships, campus involvement, and community involvement to gain experience
  • locate information on careers that interest you
  • plan your next steps after graduation, whether that includes a job or applying for graduate or professional degree programs
