University Housing & Residential Life provides housing and programs for students and faculty on and near campus. Many freshman students live on campus. They find it an invaluable way to transition into college life.

You may apply for housing before the outcome of your admission application to the University of Minnesota is known.

Living & Learning Communities

In addition to standard residence hall living arrangements, the University offers some unique housing programs called living learning communities. These communities within campus housing provide educational, social and developmental programs and services to support you with your transition to the University. You live in a “house” with residents who share similar academic interests. Hey, you and your roommate will already have something in common!

The University offers more living learning communities than the ones below, but we've collected a list of communities that may be particularly interesting to CLA students.

Housing options for transfer students

If you transfer to the University in the fall, you are unlikely to find any openings for on-campus housing. Spring semester has more openings for on-campus housing, yet they are still limited. You will probably need to look off-campus. The Transfer Student Guide has information on options and resources for transfer students.

Leaders in Transition: Transfer House

Housing and Residential Life offers a living learning community that is specially for transfer students who are interested in leadership development and civic engagement: Transfer House. Students in this living learning community take one course together: Personal Leadership at the University.
