Transferring to CLA

If you have decided that the College of Liberal Arts would be good match for your interests and goals, we welcome your application as a transfer student.

To begin the process, we've collected some information that we hope will assist you in making or firming up your decision.

Resources on Transferring Your Credits

You probably have questions about how the classes you've taken fulfill CLA's requirements. We have a number of resources to give you an idea of how your coursework will transfer. Ultimately, the Office of Admissions and the college will determine how your credits transfer and which college requirements they fulfill.

Credit evaluation resources

On its website, the Office of Admissions lists resources for evaluating the credits that you have taken and for advanced placement testing.

We particularly encourage you to check out:

Transfer advising

CLA Student Services also offers advising for transfer students. If you have questions that the Office of Admissions website, information sessions, or the Transfer Student Guide did not answer for you, contact the Office of the Assistant Dean at 612-625-3846.

Transfer information sessions

The Office of Admissions holds daily campus tours and information sessions for future College of Liberal Arts transfer students. Learn about degrees, requirements, transfer of credits, and the application process. If you do not need a tour, just come for the information session.

Transferring to CLA From Another U of M College or Campus

We welcome students who are transferring from another U of M Twin Cities campus college or U of M campus. To transfer to the College of Liberal Arts, you will need to complete an Application for Undergraduate Change of College form.

For more information about making this kind of transfer and for a link to the change of college form, visit the section for current U of M students in the Transfer Student Guide.

  • Are you really a transfer student?
  • You are a transfer student if you have been enrolled in a post-secondary school after high school.
  • You are not a transfer student if you have earned college credits while you were in high school. You would be admitted as a freshman. When you register for classes, an adviser will help you determine the right placement for you. For admissions information, visit the Office of Admissions website.

  • Are you interested in health sciences or law?
  • The University does not have undergraduate-admitting programs for these fields. We do not have majors in premed or prelaw. You will need to declare a CLA major, but don't worry. Our advisers will help you prepare for admission to these programs.

  • Are you interested in living in a residence hall or other on-campus housing?
  • The Transfer Student Guide has information on the options are available for transfer students.

  • Scholarships for transfer students
  • Scholarships are available for CLA transfer students. Awards are made in the spring for use during the following academic year.
